I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Rick's passing. I am just learning this today, October 4th. I last saw Rick on August 13th. We met at the Harley Davidson Dealership in McHenry for a bike night on our motorcycles and then went for a short early evening ride. Since my one remaining horse cannot be ridden, the motorcycles were the next best thing. We would not see each other sometimes for months due to his busy schedule and our traveling. I met Rick for the first time back in 1990 at Hawthorne Riding Stables. My late husband Rich and I helped out as outriders there on the weekends. Rick would come and rent a horse to ride and one day fell in love with a horse named "Bud". All the outriders had a great respect for Bud as he was a big strong Palomino. None of us thought he was the right horse for Rick, but Rick wouldn't hear of it. He bought him, changed his name to Dilan and never looked back. Those two developed a very special bond. We all used to trailer our horses and ride together at different trails all over the area. We had some really, really good times. Rick was there for me when my husband Rich died. They were also best friends. He was there for me when I lost my horse Hondo that lived to be 30 years old. Hondo and Dilan always got along on the trail. And when he met my current husband, Jack, he welcomed him with open arms. When we would have breakfast or lunch together they would talk about the books they've read, or politics. I just can't believe he is gone. I will remember his caring nature, positive attitude, his steadfast friendship and his love for horses. Especially Dilan. He was a good man and a very good friend. We will miss seeing his smiling face and hearing about his latest business adventure. Our deepest sympathies go out to his mother, sister, family and his Madison family. Rest in piece my good friend.

I met Rick when we lived in Tripp Hall at UW Madison back in the heydays. A dear best friend at such an important time. And then again in NY. Turned me on to many amazing things. Rolling Stones. Kinks. Comedy. Lost touch, but got back in touch 10 years ago. A horse lover. An great student of American colonial history. Who knew? Fun, funny, worldly-wise. And. a genuinely caring soul. Another, gone too soon. Will always miss.

It was with such great sadness that I heard of Rick's death. Lori introduced him into our family, and immediately Rick became one of us. He celebrated Passover and Thanksgiving with us for many years. How we will miss his smiling face and engaging personality! We celebrated with him, as he related the many success stories of his entrepreneurial skills through the years.
My thoughts and sympathy reach out to his family, friends and associates; and I join all who mourn the loss of Rick ---- this wonderfully generous caring person.

Kathy Bernstein (Lori and Steven Cohen's mother/mother-in-law)

Richard was the highest quality of human being. He was a star, a gentleman, an inspiration, a friend. I am so sad for his family and for myself not to have him in our lives.

We were shocked to hear of Rick's passing. However we shouldn't be. He was always so full of life and so full of ideas that it seemed that he would burn out or explode at any moment. It was an adventure and an amusement to have known Rick. He is dearly missed.

Our hearts are heavy as we think about how Rick came into our life....Horses were our commonality at first, then over the years he grew to be a part of our family. He celebrated every Thanksgiving and Passover with us and he always brought his interesting conversation and charm with him wherever he went, He was always a gentleman and we will miss him more than words can express. Our deepest sympathies to his mother, sister, niece and his entire family.

My wife and I were the last ones to talk to Richard at the health club. He was very kind and friendly as he told us where in town we should eat dinner. We only met him for a few moments, but he will be in our thoughts forever.
