Marvin Staehle Obituary

Marvin G. Staehle passed away on September 30th, 2022, at the age of 80 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.  Marv battled Parkinson disease and other debilitating illnesses later in life, but never lost his illuminating smile, faith in God, and love for family and friends.  Marv was surrounded by loved ones throughout his life and in his final days.

Marv was raised in Oak Park, Illinois by his father Gustuv, mother Marguerite, and sister Joan.  Marv enjoyed the company of many friends and cousins growing up. Marv attended Oak Park High School graduating in 1960.  At age 18 Marv signed a contract to play baseball with the Chicago White Sox, passing up a full ride offer to play basketball at the University of Michigan.  Over the next 13 years, Marv played with several baseball organizations including the Chicago White Sox, Montreal Expos, and Atlanta Braves.  He cherished time playing with teammates including legends like Henry Aaron & Roberto Clemente and successfully hitting off hall of famers like Bob Gibson and Nolan Ryan.

Marv married childhood sweetheart and love of his life Mary Lou Vasey on May 1st 1966 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Marv and Mary’s life in pro baseball, including winter league ball, took them across North America for 6 years living across the US, Canada, and Central America until Marv retired from baseball in 1972.

Marv & Mary Lou were dedicated and loving parents to four boys: Craig, Randy, Todd, and Mark.  After baseball Marv was given great advice by childhood friends and brother-in-law’s Jack & Bill Vasey to become a State Farm Insurance Agent. In 1972, Marv opened his agency in Buffalo Grove eventually moving and raising their family in Buffalo Grove for the next 30 years.

In addition to servicing the Buffalo Grove community as a State Farm Agent, Marv volunteered his time coaching little league baseball (BGRA), high school baseball (Buffalo Grove HS & Carmel HS), and middle school basketball (St. Mary’s).  He was best known for calling good pitchers “Baloney Arm”, developing players, and the occasional “disagreement” with umpires & referees.

Marv loved golf as much as he did baseball.  Marv enjoyed playing golf with his wife Mary and sons, but most of all with his brother-in-law’s Roger Vasey, Jack Vasey, & Bill Vasey, and friend Lee Severin.  They enjoyed golf trips to Florida as well as their notorious Wednesday game.  Later in life Marv & Mary Lou bought homes at golf clubs Geneva National in Lake Geneva Wisconsin and The Legends in Fort Myers, Florida.

Marvin is survived by the love of his life Mary Lou who was heroic in her care of Marv over the past decade as Marv’s health declined.  His loyal son’s Craig, Randy, Todd, and Mark; loving daughters-in-law Kimberly, Carolyn, Jennifer, & Molly; and adoring grandchildren Alexandria, Kyle, Nicholas, Tristan, Cassidy, Grace, Ryan, Ava, Caden, Reed, Cody, Adeline.  Marvin is preceded in death by his Father Gustuv, Mother Marguerite, & Sister Joan Glassco.
