Daryl Dean Schultz of Williams Bay, WI, formerly of Elk Grove Village, IL passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2022 at the age of 90 surrounded by his wife and two children.
Daryl was born in the City of Hampton located in north central Iowa. The son of Dr. Ole N. Schultz and Alvena E. (Johnson) Schultz, he grew up in the neighboring town of Latimer and in 1950 graduated 3rd in his class of twelve students from Franklin Consolidated High School. Daryl continued his education at Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA for 2 years before being drafted into the Korean War. He proudly served our country in the United States Army and rose to the rank of an E5 Sergeant.
After an honorable discharge, Daryl came home and resumed his studies at the University of Iowa where he earned his B.A. and M.A. in Theater Arts.
Daryl began his post graduate career at Washington High School in Washington, IA and taught English, Speech and Drama. In the mid 1960s, he moved to the Chicago, IL area where he would teach at several high schools in the NW suburbs before eventually landing at Maine Township High School District 207. He would remain there until his retirement in 1987 from Maine West High School. During these years, Daryl directed countless school plays, judged speech contests and was the PA announcer for football games. He was most proud of his time spent as an instructor and mentor to his students and their accomplishments in the Radio/TV program at WMTH-FM and WMTH-TV.
In 1966, Daryl met the love of his life Jane Rhode. They were married the following year at First United Methodist Church in Elmhurst, IL. After living in Wheaton and Arlington Heights, they made Elk Grove Village their home for the next 47 years on Forest Lane and raised their two children, Peter and Kirstin.
After his retirement from Maine West High School, Daryl started his “second career” as an actor. He appeared in numerous local theater productions over the years while also finding work in many commercials, public service announcements, television programs (most notably “America’s Most Wanted”), radio theater productions and even a few bit parts in some major motion pictures including “The Package” with Gene Hackman and “Next of Kin” with Patrick Swayze.
In his spare time, Daryl enjoyed travelling with Jane to different locales (including Alaska, Canada and Europe) along with playing golf, bicycling, exercising, researching and creating his family tree, and watching/yelling at the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls and Iowa Hawkeyes.
Daryl is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Roberta “Jane” Schultz, son Peter (Emma) Schultz of Lake Geneva, WI, daughter Kirstin (Brian) Stieglitz of Lombard, IL, adoring granddaughters Abril Mecozzi, Salma Schultz and Madeline Stieglitz, and cherished great-grandsons Jay and Jake Mecozzi. Daryl was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Owen, Donald and Roger Schultz.
