Breda Modic Obituary

Breda was born in Slovenia (Yugoslavia) and lived her early life in Škofja Loka. She loved the outdoors and all sorts of sporting activities and was an avid snow skier and hiker. She was a PE Teacher in a nearby town and participated in Gymnastics, aspiring for the Olympics. She loved commuting to her job on a Lambretta scooter. She also managed a student summer-long camps, both in the mountains and on the ocean, living in tents several months of the year. She married Lado on Feb. 9, 1957, and they enjoyed many adventures together.

She immigrated to the USA with her husband and son, Aleš, and entered the US on June 27,1966, traveling from Europe to the US on the ocean liner SS Cristoforo Colombo and landed at NY Harbor. She soon delivered the second son, Marko, who was born free from the state of communism. They lived in Chicago in a duplex owned by her parents, Ivanka and Frank Gerzel. She was also reunited with her younger brother, John, who was doing duty in Viet Nam at the time, so his wife Ann, met them upon arrival in Chicago.

In her midlife she worked for A&P grocery store and ran the Heinemann Bakery department. She was part of the Slovene ethnic community in the Heart of Chicago area. Many Slovenian festivities were attended in Chicago and Lemont.

Later the family moved to Pell Lake, WI where previously they had a small summer cottage allowing for a back home country feeling and away from “hassles of city life.” Pell Lake also had a large Slovene community, and many activities were shared among friends. She loved cooking and baking and sitting at the kitchen table having coffee and taking care of all sorts of business. She had immense artistic ability and did many crafts including her well known copper relief artwork.

The family homestead was sold in 2016, and Breda moved to nearby Lake Genva to a 1-bedroom apartment. She loved to go swimming at the YMCA pool early in the mornings and made many friends there. Recently she moved to an ALF near her son in Waterford, WI, where she made lots of new and loving friends, both with the staff and residents. She participated in many activities, including crafts and exercise programs.

She was always thinking of her family and others, and she was a devoted Daughter, Wife, Mother, Babi, Aunt and Friend to many.  She will be missed.
