William Henry Maus Jr.

Maus, William H. Jr. Born June 17, 1931 in Petoskey MI and died at his home on Lake Geneva, WI on July 8, 2019. Surviving are his children William H. (Vida) Maus III, Arthur J (Karen) Maus, Francis J. (Terry) Maus, Elizabeth Ann Maus, Edward D. Maus, James P. (Michelle) Maus, and Daniel E. (Mary) Maus. 13 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren. Bill is survived by his Sisters Jane Maus Hearne and Julie (William) Norcross, brother John (Ann) Maus and was preceded in death by his brother Thomas Sr. (Judy) Maus and also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife Jane Ann Bidwill Maus, September 19, 2014, his parents William and Gertrude Maus and his parents in-law Arthur and Mildred Bidwill. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree by the University of Notre Dame in 1953 and was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy following Officer Candidate School. Bill served as a line officer aboard the USS Washburn deployed to the Far East, and concluded his honorable service as a staff officer at Great Lakes Naval Training Station.

Upon discharge in 1956, he and Jane took up residence in Fort Lauderdale and he resumed employment with Maus and Hoffman, the national renown retail clothing business, and remained employed with the company until his death. From delivering packages as a boy to a long standing leadership role, Maus and Hoffman prospered under his guiding hand. Bill’s leadership was notable in that he accorded the employees "the dignity they deserve" and viewed vendors as partners rather than adversaries, all of whom were in a true sense "friends". His business acumen was welcomed as a long time member of the boards of Sun Trust Bank, Holy Cross Hospital and as an Ava Maria University Regent.

The life of Bill Maus was marked by abundant numbers of interlocking circles of family and friends which included Notre Dame classmates, vendors, customers, neighbors, nieces, nephews, breakfast regulars and many people encountered during his long and happy life. He sublimated his rock hard opinions to the views of others, expressing his only where appropriate.

For Bill Maus, work was his hobby and his hobby was work, interspersed between his near insatiable need to travel. Notable were the summer family motor home trips, caravan style with friends, throughout the 48 states, European buying trips and later his acquisition of an up to date motor home which rarely sat idle. Bill's need to travel was always complimented by his beloved wife Jane, whose company was required to provide the logistical needs and calming direction.

The traveling experiences, coupled with his daily consumption of at least three newspapers, weekends four, and 
his "current book" made for lively and engaging conversations accounting in large part for his personal attractiveness to the aforesaid family and diverse circles of friends.

Services for William will be held on Saturday July 13, 2019 at Noon at Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Family will receive friends at the Church at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at a later date at the University of Notre Dameʼs Cedar Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family has asked that you consider a donation in Williamʼs name to either Saint Anthonyʼs Catholic School Development Foundation in Fort Lauderdale, Florida or Catholic Central High School in Burlington, Wisconsin.
