Thomas R. Johnson, 90, a longtime resident of Lake Geneva, died Wednesday July 7, 2015 at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center.  Thomas Ray Johnson was born in Hibbing, Minnesota the son of the late Raymond and Claire (McDermott).  He graduated from Northwestern Military and Naval Academy in Lake Geneva, WI in 1942, graduating as Valedictorian and Battalion Commander.  He was a Veteran of World War II serving with the United States Army in Africa and in the European Theater.  He went ashore at the Anzio beachhead and was captured by the Germans and spent 15 months at a P.O.W. camp in Zukin Poland.  Following discharge from the Army he was placed on inactive reserve.  He was recalled to service and served during the Korean War.
On July 20, 1946 in Lake Forest, IL he was united in marriage to the former Mary Virginia McCaffery.  He was a member of the O Flag 64 P.O.W. Club.
Tom is survived by: Gina. His wife of 69 years, 2 children; Daniel (Amy) Johnson of Grand Junction, CO and Betsy Johnson of Crystal Lake, IL, 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, a brother Richard (Louise) Johnson of Glenview, IL and a daughter-in-law Colleen Johnson of Mundelein, IL.  He was preceded in death by a son Robert “Mike” Johnson and daughter Judith Leslye Johnson.
Mass of Christian Burial will be said Monday July 13, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Lake Geneva; Father Jim Scheurman will officiate.  Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery in DesPlaines, IL.  Visitation will be Monday in church from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.  Derrick Funeral Home in Lake Geneva is assisting with arrangements.  To sign the on-line guest registry click view/sign condolence book at the bottom of this page.
