Sturges P. Taggart Jr., a lifelong resident of Lake Geneva, died Saturday September 6, 2014 at Geneva Lake Manor Nursing Home. Sturges Phoenix Taggart Jr. was born on May 20, 1933 at 314 Sage St. in Lake Geneva the son of the late Sturges P. and Evangeline (Peacock) Taggart Sr. In 1940 they moved to 3726 Kelly Road where he and his family lived for 68 consecutive years. He worked as a teen on the lake jumping mail off the original Walworth and as a “boat boy” on the Tilford S. He graduated from Lake Geneva High School in 1951. He attended Carroll College. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve in 1952 and served in active reserve until discharge in 1954. He managed Taggart Lumber Company until 1962 when the Taggart family sold their property to Sentry Foods. He also managed Taggart Ready Mix from 1955 to 1971. Also during his lifetime he had pumped gas for Jack and Ernie and for Cliff and Glydie Gerber and worked for Kohn and Allen Clothing Store. Sturge managed the Lake Geneva Raceway for several years. He has been a licensed real estate broker in Lake Geneva for many years. He was a dealer of Wisconsin Homes and Wick Homes and constructed over 100 panelized and modular homes. Recently he worked at the Riviera for Gage Marine as the concierge.
On October 17, 1968 at the family farm homestead on Kelly Road he was united in marriage to the former Judie Smith. In 2006 Sturge and Judie left the farm, which had been in the Taggart family for 68 years, and moved to their present residence in Lake Geneva. Sturge was the Charter President of the Lake Geneva Jaycees and had been M.C. for the Venetian festival boat parade and fire works for 50 consecutive years. He had served as President of the Lake Geneva YMCA, was a former member of the Toastmasters and Lions Club. He had served on the Lake Geneva Parking Commission and Oak Hill Cemetery Board and at his death he was Alderman for the Third Ward. Sturge's primary hobby was raising and breeding Tennessee walking horses; his last stud horse Rusty died at age 35. Surviving Sturges are: Judie, his wife of 45 years, children; Sturge III, Dave and Alison, 7 grandsons, 4 granddaughters and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sons John and Glennie, a grandson Jason Taggart and his sister Mary Timmcke.
Services will be Friday 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pastor Mark Moller-Gunderson will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Derrick Funeral Home and after 10:00 a.m. Friday in Church. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy memorials may be made to the Sturges P. Taggart Jr. Scholarship Fund for Badger High School.
