Sheldon O. Shepstone, 86, a lifelong resident of the Lake Geneva area, died Thursday June 18, 2015 at his home. Sheldon Oliver Shepstone (Shelly) was born in Powers Lake, WI on September 6, 1928 the son of the late Oliver and Cora (Hudson) Shepstone. He graduated from Lake Geneva High School in 1946 and enlisted in the Navy. After discharge from the Navy, Shelly sold Ford cars for two dealerships, including Hetlund Cook Ford in Lake Geneva. He and his former wife, Erlene Rickard adopted two daughters, Susan and Natalie. In 1961, he joined the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department, retiring with the rank of detective 27 years later. On September 2, 1978 in Lake Geneva, WI he was united in marriage to the former Grace Netzel. Shelly loved the city of Lake Geneva. He served on the city council for 28 years as alderman, and was very proud to have served the city as Mayor for two terms from 2004 to 2008. He also served as supervisor on the Walworth County Board. He loved stock cars, and spent many summers working in the tower at the Lake Geneva Raceway. Shelly drove school bus for the local bus company for 52 years, recently retiring in 2013.
Shelly is survived by: Grace, his loving wife of 36 years, 4 children; Susan (Kirt) Kleinman of Lake Geneva, WI, Natalie (William) Hollingsworth of Firestone, CO, Gina (Brian) Torbeck of Delavan, WI and George (Sandy) Weyrauch of Gulf Port, FL, 6 grandchildren; Dawn “Dr. Dawn” (Kaahlen) O’Laughlin, Russ Bain, Thomas Bain, Hayden Weyrauch, Christian Weyrauch and Jill Hollingsworth, 4 great-grandchildren; Madelyn, Braden, Peyton and Taylor and 3 sisters; Audrey (Walter) Miller of Arbor Vita, WI, Agnes Shepstone of Strongsville, OH and Judy (Joel) Palma of East Troy, WI and many loved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers Clayton and Glenn.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Derrick Funeral Home in Lake Geneva. Funeral Services for Shelly will be held on Friday June 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. preceded by visitation at 10:00, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lake Geneva, with Pastor May Ann Moller-Gunderson officiating. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy memorials are requested in Shelly’s name to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center at Lakeland Medical Center, P.O. Box 1002, Elkhorn, WI 53121.
