Richard Liss Johnson

April 14, 1940 — April 18, 2026

Richard Liss Johnson, a cherished husband, devoted father, and beloved grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026, in McHenry, Illinois. Born on April 14, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, Richard lived a life marked by dedication, passion, and a deep love for his family and the natural world.

Richard’s early years were shaped by his upbringing under the care of his parents, Oscar and Florence, whose memory he honored throughout his life. He pursued higher education with determination, earning a bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceuticals, which paved the way for his initial career as a pharmacist. However, it was his profound connection to nature that truly defined his professional journey. For over 20 years, Richard found fulfillment working at the Morton Arboretum, where his commitment and expertise made a lasting impact, leading to a retirement marked by pride in meaningful contributions to the preservation and care of the grounds he loved so dearly.

A man of many talents and interests, Richard’s enjoyment of the outdoors was evident in his hobbies. He delighted in mowing the lawn, taking great pride in being, by his own words, the “greatest groundskeeper there was.” Fishing brought him peace and joy, offering moments of quiet reflection and connection to nature’s rhythms. Additionally, Richard had a keen interest in the stock market, engaging in it as a stimulating pursuit alongside his enduring work ethic that was evident throughout his life.

His family was Richard’s greatest source of pride and joy. Married to his beloved wife, Margaret, for 55 years, their enduring partnership was a testament to mutual respect and unwavering support. Together, they raised a daughter, Susan, and nurtured a family that extended to grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Richard’s warmth and humor shone especially brightly in his role as a grandfather, where he was known for creating funny songs that delighted his grandchildren and fostered cherished family memories.

Richard was not only a fantastic father and phenomenal grandfather but also a great-grandfather whose legacy will continue to inspire and nurture those who knew him best. His life was a rich tapestry woven with commitment to family, a passion for the outdoors, and a remarkable spirit that embraced work and play alike.

He is survived by his wife Margaret, his daughter Susan, and his grandchildren who will carry forward the loving spirit and joyful memories he so generously shared. As the family and friends gather to remember Richard Liss Johnson, they honor a life well-lived—a life of love, service, and laughter that leaves an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of Richard life will be held in the fall of 2026.
