John Joseph O’Laughlin passed away on August 3, 2026, in Harvard, Illinois. He was born on September 29, 1953, in Seneca, Illinois, and will be remembered with love and respect for the life he lived, the work he did, and the lasting impression he left on those who knew him.

John worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator at Meyer Material, alongside his father and nephew. It was work that suited him—requiring strength, dedication, skill, and a steady hand. His working life was an important part of who he was, and he took pride in the years of hard work and commitment he gave.

John was preceded in death by his father, Papa Joe O’Laughlin, and his mother, Dorothy O’Laughlin. Joe and Dorothy raised five children: JoAnne, Mary, Jim, Peggy, and their baby boy, John.

John was lovingly known by nearly everyone as “Big O,” a name that became as much a part of him as the larger-than-life personality behind it.

He is survived by his sons, John (Aaron) O’Laughlin and spouse Megan, and Kaahlen O’Laughlin and partner Amy; and his daughter, Ashley O’Laughlin-Brown and husband Jake. He is also survived by his former wife, Kim O’Laughlin, who shared an important chapter of his life and family.

But perhaps no role meant more to Big O than being a grandfather. His grandchildren—Maddie, Braden, Peyton, Peyton, Elijah, TT, Adi, Ainslie, Aiden, Lil, and Colter—held an especially important place in his heart.

John was also fortunate to have lifelong friendships that stood the test of time. A remembrance of his life would not be complete without recognizing Mark B., Chris B., and Chris G., whose friendship remained an important part of his life through the years.

For 25 years, John shared his life with his beloved partner, Barbara Schmidke and her children—Melody and Elizabeth. Barbara loved and cared for John through the years and remained faithfully by his side until the end. The comfort, companionship, and care she gave him during his final days will never be forgotten. She will also continue caring for another of John’s great loves, his beloved African Grey parrot, JoJo.

Those who knew Big O know that he would not want everyone to spend too much time being sad. Instead, he would probably ask you to pour a Bombay Sapphire Martini, take a slow sip, spend a little time savoring the green, and hit a golf ball in his honor.

And, in the immortal words of Big O:

“Take ’er Easy!”

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring of 2027 at Country Club Estates Golf Course in Fontana, Wisconsin. Additional details will be shared as the date approaches.
