Daniel Thomas Derrick Sr., a beloved pillar of the Lake Geneva community and a devoted family man, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, in his hometown of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Born January 4, 1943, Dan’s life was marked by steadfast dedication to his profession, his community, and above all, his loved ones.
A proud lifelong resident of Lake Geneva, Dan embodied the spirit and values of his close-knit community. He graduated from Badger High School in 1961 and soon went on to earn his Funeral Director’s license, embarking on what would become a remarkable 60-year career in funeral service, licensed by the State of Wisconsin. Working alongside his father, Tom Derrick, Dan helped guide the family tradition at Derrick Funeral Home, a business the Derrick family has honored since 1912. In 2012, his son Ryan joined the family business, continuing this enduring legacy.
Dan’s commitment extended beyond his professional life. He spent an impressive 54 years with the Lake Geneva Fire Department, rising through the ranks to become Deputy Chief. Known for wearing his uniform with pride and humility, he never placed his rank above others unless necessary, always demonstrating leadership with a guiding and calming presence. His tenure with the Fire Department was one of the longest in its history—a testament to his dedication and the heart he poured into his service.
Beyond his career, Dan was one of the founding members of the Lake Geneva Rotary Club and a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus, further illustrating his unwavering commitment to faith and community.
Those who knew Dan remember a man whose calming presence could dissolve tension the moment he entered a room. He was quick-witted, warm, and ever ready with a smile and a hug. His personality radiated kindness and strength, and he held a deep affection for his family, his community, and the life he built alongside his beloved wife, Sandy, who preceded him in death. Together, Dan and Sandy shared countless moments filled with joy, notably their spirited dancing to Big Band tunes and the beloved songs of the 1950s and 1960s. Whether on the dance floor or attending 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Francis, where Dan often served as a reader, their companionship was a source of happiness and laughter, especially as his children endeavored to make him smile during mass.
Dan did not claim leisure hobbies of his own but was always willing to embrace those chosen by Sandy. Together, they were familiar faces on the Friday Night Bowling League at the Lake Geneva Lanes, a small but cherished part of their shared life.
His proudest accomplishments were his impactful careers in both fire and funeral services, the love and life he shared each day with Sandy, and the relationships he nurtured within his family—including his three children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Dan’s siblings—Richard (Paula) Derrick and Steve Derrick—along with his extended family, and the entire Lake Geneva Fire Department, remember him with deep respect and affection.
Daniel Thomas Derrick Sr. is survived by his children Terra Derrick, Daniel T. Derrick Jr., and Ryan Derrick (Rebecca). He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Erin, Jake, Grace, Emma, Billy, and Sally, and great-grandchildren Hazel, Ophelia, Greyson, and Daylee. His siblings Richard (Paula) and Steve Derrick carry forward his memory.
Dan was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sandra Lee Derrick; his parents, Tom and Betty Derrick; and his brother, Jackie.
A visitation to honor Dan will be held on June 19, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Derrick Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Lake Geneva. A Mass of Christian burial will follow on June 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, with burial immediately thereafter at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Daniel Thomas Derrick Sr.’s life was a testament to duty, love, and community—values he lived by and imparted to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will endure in the hearts of those he touched, in the generations of his family, and in the community he so proudly served.
