Aartje “Audrey” Yakes, 68, of Elkhorn, WI, a longtime resident of the Lake Geneva area, died Friday May 12, 2017 at her home. The former Aartje Velthuizen was born in Bellingham, WA the daughter of Teunis and Aartje (Eylander) Velthuizen. She graduated from Lynden Christian High School in 1966. On June 2, 1967, in Lynden WA she was united in marriage to James A. Yakes. She had worked for over 25 years as a baker for Bittner’s Bakery in Lake Geneva. She was a former Town Clerk for the Town of Lyons in Wisconsin.
Audrey was a member of Calvary Community Church in Williams Bay, WI where she had been a prayer warrior, a youth leader and nursery coordinator. She was an active member of the Fire Bells in Lake Geneva supporting firefighters and police officers at major incidents. She was a member of the Wisconsin Parkinson’s Association and was the leader of the local Parkinson’s support group.
Audrey is survived by: Jim, her husband of almost 50 years, 2 children; Kimberly (Corey) Palmer of Hugo, MN and Terry (Joanne) Yakes of Saint Charles, IL, 6 grandchildren; Skyler, Sydney, Jamison, Josie, Zachary, and Grace, 4 sisters; Wilma Velthuizen Seattle, WA, Cobie Tiemersma of Everson, WA, Tina Velthuizen of South Bend, IN and Gertie (George) Cuccia of Lake Geneva, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Henri Paterson and 2 brothers; Tony and Evert.
Services for Audrey will be held on Thursday May 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Community Church in Williams Bay, WI; Pastor Chuck Cervenka will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Derrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Lake Geneva and after 10:00 a.m. Thursday in church.
